EPILOGUE

And many years later, the old man talked with his twin sons of whom he had been so proud all of his life. They gazed at the colourful garden, which was the pride and joy of the nurse.. and which she cultivated with so much tender and loving care. Her garden had been her solace in the stressful last years of her marriage and had sustained her with peace of mind. And as the old man finished telling the story, the nurse looked on.. happily. After all the uncertainty and turmoil of the past, together with the sacrifices and toll it had taken on the family, she too was at peace with herself and with the world. And the driver, the nurse and the writer were truly in union, just doing what they were meant to be doing with their lives…. at long long last!

“The world is too small for walls.”

THE SUNSET IN THE COLOURFUL GARDEN*

And ten years later with the boys living in different parts of the world (Shane had recently relocated to the vibrant city of Melbourne in Australia after a difficult period in his young life – a satisfactory outcome for which his father had fervently prayed) and Garth was living in another provincial city in New Zealand, where he was doing well as a laboratory scientist at the local hospital. Garth had returned to far-off New Zealand after his “Big OE” (mainly based in London) with his attractive and rather loquacious (at least to quiet Kiwis) Ukranian girl-friend, Erena . At least he had a stable and secure profession in the medical field, just like his proud and loving mother,

… but the father in yet another part of the :”city”, or more accurately too was so proud of his two so very different sons, their well-being the most thing in his life now… and in spite of everything. that had happened in his rather eventful life, that had always been the priority.

And the old grey-haired couple, the ex-nurse and the ex-racing driver from so so long ago sat in the morning sun on the veranda of the humble cottage in leafy Aberdeen Rd gazing at the beautiful garden, that Mary had so lovingly tendered all those long years in the rich and fertile Antipodean soil. Cups of tea in their shaking and wrinkled hands, the couple chatted, reflecting on the past, their lives… battered and bruised by the storms, yet they had been well-lived and greatly blessed by God. Especially in the form of their beloved sons, Shane and Garth, of whom the couple were so proud. This precious time together was soon coming to an end; but now the torch had been handed on to their twin sons (and someone else too)… the future generation….and they too, like countless other souls around the world would someday shine their own bright light on humanity…. And Mary smiled, as she looked across at the wrinkled, yet still handsome face of the thin old man sitting next to her. Totally at peace with themselves and with the world. And as the old man and woman gazed at the colourful flowers, mainly brilliant petunias, begonias and hydrangeas… in the spring sunshine, they once again held hands under the changing hues of the sky …a palette of brilliant colour…like the stunning garden in front of the old couple. Then later, as the bright sun slowly started setting in the west of the first city to see the sun each day…and as the bright light got steadily darker, they smiled at each other and were still truly happy…

“Love never dies,.. it just changes.”

“We shall not cease from exploration

And the end of all our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time. “

T.S. Eliot — “Little Gidding” (the last of his Four Quartets)

PS

“We learn far more from our tears than from our laughter.”

“It is always darkest before the dawn.”

“‘For I know that the plans I have for you’, says the LORD… “They are plans for good and not for disaster (evil), to give you a future and a hope.”

“Then you will call upon Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me with all your heart. I will be found by you”, says the Lord.

Jeremiah 29:25 (11-13)
